The Lotus is a bathroom renovation within a period conversion in London, for clients who wanted calm built in rather than added on. The brief was precise: a floating vanity with integrated storage, a separated wet area combining shower and steam sauna, a private toilet nook behind a partition, a bathtub with storage for books and wine, and garden views while showering or bathing. Beneath the checklist sat a quieter ask, a nod to the clients' East Asian heritage carried in clean lines and natural textures.

Three layouts were drawn to test what the room could hold, and the chosen plan won on clean circulation and maximised space: the wash basin runs as a central spine, the WC tucks privately behind it, and the bath claims the garden window. The room becomes a private sanctuary shaped by contrast and balance, structured but warm, with every daily ritual, washing, steaming, soaking, reading in the bath, given a place of its own.

Terracotta plaster wraps the walls and floor in one warm, continuous surface, held against a timber ceiling and joinery in cherry and oak. The bath is cut from green banded onyx, echoed in the steam room bench and wall, while copper fittings, from rainfall shower to flush plate, are left to deepen with use.

The rituals do the designing. A glass-enclosed steam room with a floating onyx bench, a timber-lined WC lit by a single concealed cove, a fluted travertine vanity wall with backlit mirror and twin textured glass basins, and slippers waiting under the bench. Bathing here is closer to an onsen than a morning routine.
